Target fine lines and wrinkles from the start

Like death and taxes, fine lines and wrinkles are a reality for most of us as we age. Our skin also gets thinner and more delicate, an inevitable part of the aging process caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. These two proteins are widely recognized as the fibrous building blocks that supercharge and support the structure of the skin, keeping it smooth and resilient.

While it is normal for skin to lose some of its resilience as we grow older, one of the most important contributing factors to skin aging is sun damage. It is estimated that UV light from the sun is responsible for up to 90% of visible changes in the skin. This is also referred to as cumulative sun damage and is particularly prevalent in mature beauty consumers.

Formulations that can boost and protect sun-damaged and aging skin mean that product development in the category is at an all-time high. This offers great opportunities for product innovation coupled with the strong purchasing power of mature consumers actively looking to engage with a brand that can target their specific skin concerns.

Industry experts estimate that the global anti-aging beauty and cosmetics market, particularly for products that can target fine lines and wrinkles, is expected to reach $75.82bn in 2030 with a CAGR of 5.5%. Growth is largely fueled by education and awareness around the benefits of anti-aging, sun care, and beauty products.1 This makes product development for aging consumers a continuing area of development and interest for beauty and personal care product developers.

To fully understand the anti-aging beauty market, let’s look at what contributes to skin aging and how formulators are taking these insights on board to develop new products for a youthful glow.

Collagen & elastin

As mentioned earlier, strong healthy skin has an abundance of collagen and elastin. As the richest form of protein in the body, collagen’s fiber-like structures build connective tissue, while elastin gives elasticity and resilience to connective tissues. Incredibly, elastin is about a thousand times more flexible than collagen - giving skin its stretch and bounce.

As we age, elastin cells become weaker or damaged, resulting in fine lines and wrinkles, and while this is a natural part of the aging process, sun damage, environmental pollution, and smoking can accelerate the process.2 As elastin works in tandem with collagen, formulators looking to develop new products that can target aging skin should include ingredients with strong emollient and anti-oxidative properties.3

This will enable beauty and skincare consumers to take the right steps, keeping their skin richly moisturized with skin-boosting ingredients. While there's no single way to prevent skin from aging, using the right products, and staying safe in the sun can help you keep your skin in tip-top condition.4

Care in the sun

At Oleon Health and Beauty, we know that consumers prefer light facial sunscreens that will improve the skin’s after-feeling – bringing a sense of lightness to the skin without weighing it down, particularly when out in the sunshine.

Here our emollients, particularly Jolee® 7202, can play an important role. As a very light emollient, Jolee® 7202 offers a dry, powdery after-feel which makes it an ideal emollient for daily suncare formulations. With its ability to mimic the feeling of silicon on the skin, this emollient gives an excellent spread, absorption, and unique feeling of lightness. This product is also an effective UV filter solubilizer for organic UV filters. When used in combination with Radia® 7220, it can further improve the skin's feeling, bringing a lovely softness to the skin.

How Oleon Health and Beauty can help

By using ingredients in our innovative honest Jolee® brand, product formulators can assist skincare consumers in improving skin barrier strength and resilience to offset the visible signs of aging. In addition, our emollient portfolio can fulfill the sensorial needs of different skin types while protecting its delicate structure from sun exposure, pollution, and adverse weather conditions.
